Why Friday is the most popular working from home day...

On average, UK workers are going into the office around 1.4 – 2 days a week, before the Covid19 pandemic this was much higher at 3.8 days per week. Research has found as little as 13% of workers go into the office on a Friday.

New Research has found that British workers spend less time in the office than their counterparts in every other country bar the Philippines.

The Office of National Statistics reports that while the trend in fully remote working has fallen since 2021, a hybrid-working model (part travelling to work, and part at home), has become the ‘new normal’ for around a quarter of workers.

Working from home on Fridays has caused a drop in commuter traffic and more people have said it makes them feel “ready for the weekend the second they finish work”, giving them a better work-life balance.

Can cost of living get people back in the office?

However, could the rising cost of living put an end to working from home?

The cost of working from home is likely to soar as energy bills rocket. Could the cost of returning to the office be financially worthwhile?

On one hand, working in the office would allow people to save money where possible on heating and electricity. Even boiling the kettle a few times a day could make a big difference to some people.

Alternatively, data also showed that 62% of employees were concerned about travelling to work due to the rising fuel costs. People have financially benefitted from flexible working by removing the often lengthy and boring rush hour commute, which has previously been an encouraging factor for remote working.

The future of home working?

Some employers have claimed that working from home has helped them to retain the workforce during national staffing shortages and flexibility has helped their workforce to become more productive. However other companies such as Boots and THG made employees return to the office 5-days a week, while other companies have removed their work from home Friday’s policy due to claims people were not treating Friday as a working day.

There’s no “one size fits all” approach to working patterns for individuals and businesses, particularly with the current state of the economy. Will rising energy costs cause people to return to the office this winter and put an end to the popularity of working from home? Or will the price of commuting attract more people to work from home like they do on a Friday?
